CSCS cards - How to earn or upgrade your CSCS card with CourseSight

Your CSCS card is your passport to employment in the construction industry. It can dictate the jobs, pay packet and promotions you are able to achieve in your career. CSCS cards can be gained or upgraded through two avenues – experience and training. Here is a quick guide to CSCS card types and the training that you can book with CourseSight to get the right card for you. CSCS card applicants need to prove they have the training and qualifications required to carry out their job and apply for the correct card for their occupation.

The main CSCS card types:

Green –

Labourer - You will need to have passed the CITB Health, safety and environment test within the last 2 years. This is a lifetime qualification that only needs to be completed once and will be accepted in 5 years’ time when renewing your Labourer card.

Which training to book with CourseSight: The QCF Level 1/SCQF Level 4 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment or SCQF Level 5 REHIS Elementary Health and Safety Certificate.

Red –

Trainee - This card is available if you are a trainee and are registered for a qualification that leads to a skilled CSCS card (in the majority of cases a NVQ/SVQ). Please note: SSSTS, SMSTS and NEBOSH General will not be accepted as routes to a Trainee card.

Which training to book with CourseSight: Any NVQ or SVQ that leads to a relevant skill or trade.

Apprentice - This card is available to people who have commenced on a recognised apprenticeship framework. This card is valid for four years and six months, and cannot be renewed.

Which training to book with CourseSight: Depending on the apprenticeship you are undertaking you can also book onto supplementary courses to further your career and be in an even better position at the end of your apprenticeship. Ones to consider are management courses, mental health first aid, fire warden or specialist courses such as working in confined spaces that may give you the edge when applying for senior roles.

Experienced Technical, Supervisor or Manager - This card is available to Supervisors, Managers and Technical Workers with on the job experience (normally at least one year in the last three) who have not achieved a construction related NVQ or SVQ level 3, 4 or 5 (or construction related QCF NVQ Level 6 or 7) and are not a member of an approved Professional Body. The card is valid for three years and cannot be renewed.  It is issued on a temporary basis, while a Construction related NVQ or SVQ is being achieved. It is expected to be replaced by a skilled five year card on achievement of a Construction related NVQ or SVQ Level 3 or higher.

Which training to book with CourseSight: Although you do not need any training to gain this card, it is important to book an NVQ or SVQ as soon as possible to ensure you have plenty of time to complete a relevant course before the expiry date of this card.

Experienced Worker - This card is available to workers with on the job experience (normally at least one year in the last three).

The card is valid for one year and cannot be renewed.  It is issued on a temporary basis, while a Construction Related QCF qualification is being achieved. It is expected to be replaced by a skilled five year card on achievement of a Construction Related NVQ or SVQ Level 2 or higher.

Which training to book with CourseSight: Although you do not need any training to gain this card, it is important to book an NVQ or SVQ as soon as possible to ensure you have plenty of time to complete the course before the expiry date.

Blue –

Skilled Worker – This card is available to individuals who can display skill in a specific craft or construction related job area through the completion of a professional qualification.

 

Which training to book with CourseSight: A construction related NVQ or SVQ level 2 or an apprenticeship, such as an Employer sponsored apprenticeship, a City and Guilds of London Institute Craft Certificate or a CSCS Approved Trailblazer.

Gold –

Advanced Craft – This card is available to those who have achieved a higher level qualification in construction.

Which training to book with CourseSight:

  • A Construction Related NVQ or SVQ level 3
  • An approved indentured apprenticeship (e.g.with NJCBI, BATJIC etc.)
  • An employer sponsored apprenticeship which included the achievement of a City and Guilds of London Institute Advanced Craft Certificate.

Supervisory - This card is available for supervisor and technical occupations subject to the achievement of a higher level qualification.

Which training to book with CourseSight: A construction Related Supervisory/Technical NVQ or SVQ level 3 or 4

Black –

Manager - This card is available for manager and technical occupations subject to achievement of a relevant construction qualification.

 

Which training to book with CourseSight: A relevant Construction Management/Technical related NVQ/SVQ level 4, 5, 6 or 7 for example the SMSTS course.

White –

Academically Qualified Person - This card is available to people who have completed certain construction related higher qualifications.

Which training to book with CourseSight: To gain this card enrol onto one of the construction relevant degrees, HNDs, HNCs, CIOB Certificates or NEBOSH diplomas.

Professionally Qualified Person - This card is available to competence assessed members of CSCS approved Professional Bodies.

Which training to book with CourseSight: Although no specific qualification is required for this card you can further your career by completing relevant qualifications such as management courses, mental health first aid, fire warden or specialist courses such as working in confined spaces that may give you the edge when applying for specialist roles.
